- Many apps on Mac have Touch Bar controls that make common actions even easier. With Sidecar, you get a Touch Bar on your iPad screen even if your Mac doesn’t have a Touch Bar. It works just like the Touch Bar on Mac, and you can tap its controls with either your finger or Apple Pencil.
- Quality settings can be tweaked via the Duet companion app on your Mac or PC to provide higher graphics, smoother refresh rates, etc. And to disconnect the display, simply close the app on your iPad.

A year ago, I switched to Linux from Windows, and I am happy with it. I had always used a VM to run Linux before, but I am finally getting to know how things work in Linux after natively installing it. There are many Linux alternatives for Windows programs, so I normally have no problem using Linux programs.
The only thing I missed about Windows is iPad dual monitor apps like Duet Display. A little bit of searching the web led me to some solutions like Aditya’s post and a thread in Arch Linux forum, so I was able to make my iPad a second display. However, the solutions in the post required to input some command manually every time I enable dual screen and don’t work nicely as-is.
This LG monitor supports USB-C and Thunderbolt. The Thunderbolt 3 charges the Mac mini, and the three USB-C ports offer 5Gbps downstream. Its 27 inches big, which is about the size of Apple's larger iMac, and has a similar P3 wide color gamut with 500 nits brightness.
As I tired typing commands by hand and memorizing them, I decided to write my own script
ipad_monitor.sh
. This script is still far from “automagically” but it works mostly out of the box. All you need to do is changing WIDTH
and HEIGHT
at the beginning of the code. Since it uses VNC to connect to an iPad, it also works with any tablet and computer with a VNC client. Here it goes:So, what the script does is 1. to parse arguments to set a proper resolution, 2. add a display mode using
XRandR
, 3. Output it next to a primary display, 4. and run x11vnc
to transmit the screen through VNC.How to use
- Install
x11vnc
first:sudo apt-get install x11vnc
. - Change
WIDTH
andHEIGHT
in the script to change the resolution. - Figure out your local IP address using
ip addr
orifconfig
- Run this script. Addtional arguments are self-explanatory. Example arguments:
- Connect your iPad using your favorite VNC app. IP address is :
your.ip.addr.ess:5900
Performace
I use an i5-4210M laptop as a VNC server and iPad Pro 2nd Gen as a client. Testing is done on a local area network, meaning that the VNC server and client are connected to the same home router using WiFi, and with VNC screen both at 1368x1024 and 2736x2048 with full colors. Syntek stk1160 driver xp download.
Just like I do daily with a second screen, I tried using a web browser on the VNC screen. Although it did not work as smoothly as paid dual screen apps or Windows RDP, it worked pretty fine. It showed the browser window almost instantly and the screen update rate was not bad when I fast scrolled up and down the browser. The screen shutterEverything worked without a big issue.
Note that the performance depends on routers. I also tried it on a public WiFi and it was almost useless. If this is the case, I would suggest using the offline solutions mentioned in QnA below. Actually the offline solutions usually perform better than connecting via a home router.
Use Ipad As Mac Screen
Regarding resource usage,
x11vnc
uses very few RAM but constantly uses 2% to 5% while showing a still image. Its CPU usage occasionally spikes up to 40% while scrolling the browser, so it obviously drains laptop battery. That’s it. I hope someone finds it useful.

How I can use it offline?
Apple mac manual. You may want to connect them directly using WiFi hotspot. How to download windows on mac vmware. There are two ways:
- Create a WiFi hotspot on your laptop. You can do this simply using
create_ap
package, e.g.sudo create_ap wlp0s0 wlp0s0 _Your_SSID_ _Your_Password_
. Note that not all hardware support this feature. - Enable “Personal Hotspot” on your tablet and connect your laptop. WARNING: It will drain your mobile data, although I personally checked my iPad that it doesn’t use mobile data for VNC connection.
In either way, use a proper local network IP managed by the laptop/iPad.

Wayland?
This script heavily relies on an x11 utility,
XRandR
. Unfortunately, Wayland dropped support for XRandR screen control. And there doesn’t seem to be an XRandR
command alternative for Wayland. It looks like Wayland doesn’t want user apps to change monitor resolution (but…why?). So I don’t know how to do the same thing using simple bash scripts for now.How to set a VNC password?

For those of you who use dual monitors in the office, you know how much more efficient you are when you get a second (or third) monitor for your office. Once you get used to dual monitors, you get spoiled. I’m sure there are times when you’re away from the office and you are working on your laptop, and you are dying for that second monitor. The problem is that no one wants to haul around a monitor to connect it to your laptop. A great solution to this annoyance is to make your iPad a second monitor for your laptop. Most people who have laptops also have iPads. Despite the clamor to move to iPads years ago, they have become niche devices primarily for checking email and browsing the Internet. Serum music download. But to do any serious editing of documents or composing long emails while away from the office, the laptop is still king.
The biggest complaint about this type of solution is the response of the second monitor (iPad) isn’t as crisp as an original display. This solution is great for business use but not so much if trying to manipulate advanced graphics (although some folks use it for photo editing and keep their tools up on the iPad while the laptop screen does the hard work). The actual screen is pretty sharp but the latency is usually caused by the relatively slow connection that the network provides. Video signal just doesn’t transmit as well over the air when compared to a wired connection. The general idea here is that the second monitor won’t be used for major graphics rendering but will be used to keep a second application, such as Outlook or Word, going while another application is running on the laptop’s screen. For that, it’s fabulous.
Here are the names of a couple of leading iPad monitor apps, both available for Mac and Windows. They cost around $10, less than the cost of an adapter to hook up a second monitor, by the way:
- AirDisplay: written by a company called Avatron which actually is better known for remote access to your computer. Developing a display extender app like AirDisplay is a natural next step. Installation is quick and easy and the app has some great features and tools that make iPad screen extension a breeze. www.Avatron.com
- xDisplay: Their developer, SplashTop, claims to have 15 million users, so they must be doing something right. Their claim is “anytime, anyware, any device” so they’ve invested in making their app work on many different devices, including smart phones, Windows tablets and Apple products. www.SplashTop.com
Although there are several iPad apps that perform this function, they all use the same protocols to connect and behave in a similar manner. Here are the basic steps for installation:
- Make sure your iPad and laptop are on the same local network. If you’re at home, just make sure they are both connected to your home WiFi. You can also connect via BlueTooth but WiFi is recommended if available.
- Download the app onto the iPad.
- Once installed on the iPad, install the app onto your laptop. Once installed, the laptop app finds the iPad. Make a few basic selections and you are off and running.
So if you are a lawyer or financial guru on the road and want a lightweight second monitor, consider this solution and improve your productivity. You’re taking your iPad with you anyway, so why not put it to good use?
